What is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis also referred to as gouty arthritis. Gout appears when you have excessive quantities of uric acid in the blood.  This excessive uric acid leads to the formation of needle-shaped sodium urate crystal in the synovial fluid from an affected joint.

Gout most common affect the joint of big toe, also could affect the foot, ankle, knee, finger, wrist, and elbow joint.

Acute gout attack some times strikes without warning, mostly affect the joint of big toe.  Acute gout attack may follow an operation, infection, or a minor irritation such as tight shoes, or it may have no apparent causes.

Acute gout attack may last a few days or weeks. The symptoms seem disappeared until next attack. After a number of acute gout attack, symptoms of chronic gout may develop.  The joint affected by chronic gout may degenerate, or deformity eventually loses the ability of movement.

Gout Symptoms  

Gout symptoms may appear by swelling, inflammation, and extreme pain in an affected joint during an acute gout attack.  After years of gout attack, it may permanently damaging and deforming joints.  

Acute gout symptoms are characterized by a rapid onset of pain in the affected joint with warmth, swelling, reddish discoloration, and tenderness. Gout pain could be intense that even a blanket or sheet touching the skin over the affected joint could be unbearable.

In chronic gout, nodular masses of uric acid crystals deposit in different soft tissue areas of the body, even though the crystals found as hard nodules around the fingers, at the tips of the elbows, and around the big toe, crystal nodules could appear many part of the body.

Causes of Gout

Causes of gout may be due to an elevated blood level of uric acid indicate an increased risk of gout; the relationship between hyperuricemia and gout is not exactly clear.  

There are other contributing factors that cause gout such as excessive weight gain, heavy alcohol intake, high blood pressure, and abnormal kidney function.

Other causes of gout could be from certain drugs, diseases, illness, and chemotherapy may lead to excessive production of uric acid in the body.   Certain conditions may precipitate gout attack such as dehydration, injury to the joint, fever, excessive eating, and recent surgery.  

Causes of gout may also include diet, life style, under excretion of urate, the salts of uric acid, renal under excretion of uric acid, and genetic predisposition.
